Sox defeat Panthers 16-11; move to 3-0 in series

The Brantford Red Sox are a win away from advancing to the second round of the Intercounty Baseball League playoffs, and they did it by hitting eight home runs en route to a 16-11 win over the Kitchener Panthers in one of two games played in the IBL on Saturday night.

The Red Sox now lead the Panthers 3-0 in their best-of-seven quarter final series with the potentially series deciding game four slated for Sunday night at 7 p.m. at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener.

Al Stephens had two home runs in the game, giving him four home runs in the last two games. He finished the game with three RBI and two runs scored. Josh McCurdy, Terrell Alliman, Lee Delfino, Jason Gotwalt and Tyler Patzalek all also contributed with homers of their own in the win, with Alliman ending the night with four hits, four runs scored and four RBI. Delfino had three hits in total with two runs scored and one RBI, and Gotwalt had a pair of hits with four RBI and one run scored.

Starter Andy St. Gelais picked up the win, giving up seven hits and seven earned runs with one walk and three strikeouts over the opening five innings.

The Panthers managed four home runs of their own, accounting for four of their eleven hits compared to the 22 of the suddenly hot Red Sox. Mat Taube was one of the Kitchener players to homer with a three run shot and a single, finishing with four RBI and two runs scored. Luke Baker had four hits – a double and three singles – with three runs scored. Jeff Pietraszko, Brent Mitchell and Nathan Grant were the other Panthers to homer, with Mitchell and Grant each totalling two hits on the night with one RBI and one and two runs scored, respectively.

Brandon Farquhar took the loss, allowing ten hits and eight earned runs with no walks or strikeouts over the opening 3 1/3 innings.
