Sox edge out Panthers in 14 innings

In Brantford, Wayne Forman drove in the winning run with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the 14th inning, leading the Brantford Red Sox to a 3-2 win over the Kitchener Panthers, sending the three-time defending IBL champions into the second round.

Brantford wins the best-of-seven series four games to one and joins Barrie and Ottawa in the second round. The Red Sox will play either Toronto or Ottawa in the next round.

It was a classic fifth game between the clubs, with the score tied 2-2 from the top of the fourth inning until the bottom of the 14th. The Sox scored the run after there were two out, loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk before Forman's hit scored Jason Gotwalt with the winning run.

Gotwalt had three of the Sox's 12 hits in the game, while Forman and Josh McCurdy each added a pair of hits.

Starter Mike Meyers went 8 1/3 innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits with nine strikeouts and four walks. Stefan Strecker pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings before Andy St. Gelais got the win. St. Gelais went three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.

Keith Hoefel went seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk before Brandon Farquhar came on in relief. Farquhar allowed just one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and three walks in a game that took just three hours and 34 minutes to play despite going 14 innings.

Luke Baker had five hits, and scored a run and drove in another, in a losing cause. Mike Andrulis and Shaun Valeriote both added two hits for Kitchener.
